Safety measures: Generative Design in Spine Protection - Building better safety products with data-driven design

Over-rotation of the spine is proven to be the major cause of spinal fractures, spinal cord injuries, and paraplegia - but most back protectores are designed to guard against only direct impacts.
The austrian design studio EDERA SAFETY is working to change that.
Using Autodesk generative technology, adamsfour. - an in-house brand at EDERA SAFETY - has developed a Rotational Spine Protection (RSP) system to help prevent spinal rotational injuries. To create the system, the team developed its own crash-test dummy with a properly rotating spine and outfitted it with sensors to collect data about what happens when rotational forces are applied in every direction.

That data was then incorporated into the design process using generative design and Autodesk Fusion 360 to produce a back-protection system that absorbs rotational energy to defend the user from potential injury.
