Edera Safety has committed itself to increase the impact of personal safety gear (PSA+) in the areas of sports and industrial safety.
The dynamic sports gear sector, enables constantly faster operation speeds and better product performance. This leads to higher injury risks. Despite current therapy methods,- irreversible injuries, caused by sport activities such as e.g spinal cord injuries can not not be cured completely. We are investigating in electronic monitoring systems (PSA+) to gather more information about injuries, and reinterpretate the results into products.
Current back protectors only have the capacity of protecting severe spinal injuries to a certain degree. Adamsfour. offers an escalation of spinal protection to a much higher level. The project „adamsfour.“ is invested in the realization of producing a new spinal protector system. This technology shall prevent severe spinal cord injuries and surpass the capacity of existing back protectors on the market. The impact of what this product has to offer has been scientifically proven, in cooperation with the medical universities of Vienna and Graz. The patented technology shall offer the ability of protecting the back from the most common spinal cord injuries, often causing paraplegia starting from sports to working gear and rehabilitation products.
Spinal Cord Injuries.
Per statistics, every year between 250.000 and 500.000 people suffer spinal cord injuries.2 Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI) is a medically complex condition, impacting the victims life’s and in many cases leading up to life long disabilities. For the rest of such an individual, their environment become challenging with daily discomforts and confrontations in today’s society. These victims are left becoming dependent and a responsibility to society, also impacting social systems and the overall economy. “The international symbol of disability is the wheelchair and the stereotype of a person with disability is a young man or woman with paraplegia.”3 Regardless of the cause of paralisation, perhaps due to extreme sports, a car related accident or a tumor pressing against the spinal cord, the consequences are either premature mortality or at best social exclusion. None of us are prepared or exempt from this risk, especially those choosing to engage in extreme sports. The high demands of such victims are financially extremely draining to the European health care system. The 2013 annual report of Injury database Austria has exploited, that around 75% of severe and mortal injuries are caused in leisure time, and the majority of these accidents are associated with various consumer products including sport equipment. This report has been generated by the European Home and Leisure Accident Surveillance System (EHLAS)4. This addresses serious concerns for amateurs, regarding prevention and healthcare insurances . However, beside the costs for immediate accidental attendance, long time follow up costs occur. Calculations from the Victorian Neurotrauma Initiative5 show that in Australia the estimated treatment costs belong in paraplegia around 3,6 million €, for a person with tetraplegia around 7 million €. Indirect costs, such as educational pre investments and lost earnings generally exceed direct costs.6 Due to the acceleration of today’s level of extreme sports, it is essential for existing back protectors to elevate with its demands. Spinal Protection Concept.
According to recent surveys of major spinal injuries in Germany, current back protectors can avoid only 4% of spinal traumas. To clarify these surveys, spinal injuries can be classified into 2 categories:
Direct spinal impacts represent a ratio of 4% of the studies.
The majority of these injuries (96%) are spinal overextensions Current back protectors are based on a rigid shock absorbing system, which absorbs shocks against external impacts. Comparing both developments, MADKEM ́s product focuses on the emphasis of protecting spinal overextensions (as described in chart 1). Our process of protection is by emulating the structure and physiology of the human spine. By achieving this we have structured an internationally patented likewise bionic mechanism, which shall be implemented in a harness.
In cooperation with the Austrian Ice Hockey club „Graz 99er´s“ we are developing an ellbow protector, focussing on biomechanic overextensions. In order to gather information about the injury we are cooperating with the Institute for anatomics in Graz. The product is integrated in adamsfour, and will be available as brand in brand technology soon.
